How Will You Spend Your Retirement Years?

Retirement.  A single word that holds significant weight and meaning for many different people.  What does retirement mean to you?  Although the term can be interpreted differently based on personal dreams and passions, author Catherine Pulsifer seems to accurately capture the universal idea: "Planning to retire? Before you do, find your hidden passion, do the thing that you have always wanted to do."  Check out the list below of some of the most common retirement hobbies; maybe you’ll find your hidden passion!

Traveling.  Maybe it’s the warm, beach breeze and sand-in-your-toes destination.  Or, maybe it’s the fast-paced, bright city lights that are calling your name.  Or, it may just be your innate wanderlust that’s finally surfacing.  Whatever the destination and reason may be, you know that you’re ready to see the world, and retirement is the perfect time to feed this hidden passion.  Take this online quiz to discover your ideal retirement destination!

Spending time with family.  For others, traveling doesn’t sound nearly as satisfying as staying at home and spending time with family.  Retirement is a great time to reconnect with your kids and grandkids.  Maybe it’s as simple as reading your grandson a bedtime story or having a cup of tea with your daughter.  These little moments can certainly last a lifetime.  This article by The Huffington Post perfectly captures these special moments and reminds us of their importance.  This post was also shared on our Facebook page.

Coaching or teaching.  Many people spend their retirement years coaching a local high school sports team, tutoring at a community college, or teaching music lessons.  Retirement offers the perfect opportunity to use your gifts and talents to help others develop their own.  Check out this article from The New York Times to find out if teaching may be your retirement hidden passion.

Outdoor activities.  Is it a cliché to say that golfing is the perfect retirement activity?  Maybe.  But, we’ll add to that list by also mentioning fishing and gardening.  These three activities are classic ways to enjoy your retirement without being cooped up inside!  Visit The National Park Service for information about local parks and outdoor activities!

Crafting.  Many spend their retirement years scrapbooking, framing, sewing, painting and trying their hand at photography!  With websites like Pinterest, crafting has never been easier.

Cooking.  Maybe you’re tired of the same old recipes.  What about that cooking class you’ve always wanted to take?  For some, retirement offers the perfect opportunity to try new recipes and new styles of cooking and baking.  This is a hobby that the whole family will benefit from!  Visit All Recipes for delicious ideas!

Reading.  A cup of coffee in one hand and a novel in the other.  Does this sound perfect, or what?  Retirement also offers the chance to read that book you’ve always wanted to start, but never had the chance to.  Throw some logs on the fire, warm up your coffee and break open that book – now’s your chance!  Check out Goodreads to create personalized reading lists!
